What is sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is skin that experiences the slightest sensation more intensely than normal skin due to an imbalanced ecosystem (hydric & lipidic system). Skin sensitivity can range from mild to severe therefore it is imperative to recognize and treat mild sensitivity as soon as possible to avoid a progression with increased intensity. Sensitive skin is caused by:

  • Heredity

  • Psychological or emotional stress

  • Environmental aggressors: pollution, cold, sun, wind, etc.

  • Chemical stressors: medicine, soaps, detergents, unsuitable cosmeceutical skin care, unsuitable exfoliants, make-up, etc.

  • Physical stressors: gommage, brushing, mechanical exfoliation such as rubbing and epidermabrasion, etc.

How to recognize sensitive skin?

  • Redness

  • Itchiness or discomfort

  • Flakiness

  • Major dehydration

  • Tightening sensation

  • Blotchiness

  • Premature lines and wrinkles

It is important to note that some sensitive skin may not present any visible signs of sensitivity, hence the importance of questioning the individuals to learn of any past circumstances when they experienced this condition. Note that a non-treated or incorrectly treated sensitive skin may become reactive (excessively sensitive).

It is always important to take the skin's temperature to determine the possibility of non-visible sensitivity by placing your wrist on the various zones of the face. Areas with underlying sensitivity generally exhibit a noticeably higher temperature than non-sensitive areas.
